Ways to Bustle Your Wedding Dress

After buying your dream wedding gown, don’t forget about choosing the perfect bustle to compliment your dress. A bustle is a set of hooks, loops or strings attached to the outside or underneath of your wedding gown to pull the train up after the ceremony to allow for dancing and better mobility throughout the reception.

Most brides don’t know there are many ways to bustle a wedding gown and the type of bustle depends on the fabric, style of dress and your personal taste. I have listed the three most common bustles so you can learn the basics to choosing the right bustle for you!

Over-Bustle (Ballroom Bustle):

The over-bustle or ballroom bustle is one of the most common and cost efficient ways to bustle a wedding gown.  With this type of bustle the seamstress adds a loop on the back outer part of the dress that will go over a button that is attached at the bodice.  Keep in mind, this choice is best for girls with lighter dresses since this bustle may break if the fabric is too heavy. You can choose a three point over-bustle where the train is attached at three different places on the back outside of the dress.  This is better for a heavier fabric and if done correctly, it should look like there was no train at all!

French Bustle:

A french bustle uses a series of strings under the dress that tie together to form the bustle. These strings are usually numbered or colored for easy pairing.  Once each string under the dress is tied together, the bustle is complete.  In my opinion, this is one of the best bustles to use since it works well for most fabrics and usually lasts longer and is more secure than an over-bustle.  Some brides will even have a double or triple french bustle to create more layers on the back of the dress.

Austrian Bustle:

An austrian bustle is not as popular but is gaining popularity.   This bustle uses a string and a pull system (similar to blinds) that gives the look of a seam running down the back of the dress.

Even though hiring a seamstress to add a bustle is an additional cost in most salons take my advice and pay the extra money for the bustle or use a friend that is a skilled seamstress.  I promise that adding a bustle to your dress will be worth every penny.  No bride wants to drag the back of their dress around or have guests stepping on their dress all night long!!

2012 Trend: Bridesmaids in Skirts

One of the newest fashion trends for 2012 is bridesmaids wearing skirts and tops instead of dresses.  When I first saw this trend I wasn’t sold on the idea but after some time I have warmed up to it.

I would think that finding the right skirt/ top combo would be much harder to find than a dress however there are some advantages.  If you shop in a retail store you may be able to find a skirt/top combo for less expensive than a traditional bridesmaid dress.   In addition, your girls have gained a shirt and a top that they could definitely add to their wardrobe to wear again with less formal pieces.

There are many different styles of skirts that could change the “look” of the skirt from less formal to formal wear.  For example, take a look at this pencil skirt bridesmaid outfit paired with a button down shirt versus a patterned skirt and relaxed shirt.

If you decide on a skirt/top combo you can decide to have your girls wear the same skirt and top or have every girl choose a different skirt in the same color scheme.

If you think a skirt can’t be formal enough choose a pleated skirt and lace top like below…very elegant and perfect for a more formal affair!

It is obvious this trend is not for every bride but we want to know what you think about it?

Convertible Bridesmaid Dresses

Convertible dresses are dresses that can be worn many different ways (halter, crisscross, off the shoulder, one shoulder, etc.) and are the new “perfect” choice for bridesmaids to wear in 2012!

Picking bridesmaids dresses is never an easy job.  Many times you are trying to pick one dress that flatters all of your girls’ body types and comes in a color that compliments your wedding….almost impossible (or it may feel that way)!  Convertible dresses are a great way to give your bridesmaids a little choice in what they wear by being able to choose the tie that they like and also makes it easier for you to choose a dress!

Two Birds has amazing bridesmaid dresses that can be tied 15 different ways and are available in 4 different lengths. These dresses are a little pricey ranging from $270-310 but it is such a versatile dress that there is no doubt in my mind that they can wear it again.  Depending on the style of dress, they come in up to 20 different colors and can even be two-toned (top one color and the bottom another).

The Dessy Group also offers a convertible dress starting at $140 and can be either short or long, tied 7 different ways and can come in up to 28 different colors.

I love the fact that your bridesmaids can now wear a more conservative tie for the ceremony and then spice it up for the reception.  You can let your bridesmaids choose how they want to wear their dress so they feel comfortable wearing the tie that not only flatters their body but they feel confident in.

What do you think about these convertible dresses?
